CW5 Steven W. Stumbo began his military career by enlisting in the 400th Medical Evacuation Detachment Iowa National Guard in 1986 as a UH-1 Helicopter Mechanic. For over 37 years, he has supported the Iowa National Guard and held a variety of assignments. CW5 Stumbo was originally commissioned as a 2LT after graduating from the Iowa Military Academy in July 1989. He attended the Aviation Officer Basic Course and Initial Entry Rotary Wing Course in 1991 and graduated as a UH-1 Army Aviator. He served as a Platoon Leader in D Co 109th AVN BN and 1187th Medical Evacuation Company before becoming a Warrant Officer with C Co 2-135th in Oct 1995. After 18 years of service, he joined the Active Guard and Reserves program as the B Co 1-147th AVN Readiness Officer. Following this he served as the Aviation Life Support Equipment Officer, UH-60 Instructor Pilot, Instrument Flight Examiner, Standardization Instructor Pilot, and Readiness Officer with C Co 2-147th Assault Company. In 2017 CW5 Stumbo became the 2nd Officer in Charge of the 248th Aviation Support Battalion. In Nov 2018 he was assigned as the HHD 671st TC Commander while still serving full-time as an Aviation Training Officer. He later transitioned into 671st Troop Command Officer in Charge position while the MSC transitioned to a new mission. CW5 Stumbo has served as the Full-time Aviation Operation Officer G3-A Directorate Staff position prior to his assignment as the 8th Command Chief Warrant Officer of the Iowa National Guard.


CW5 Stumbo’s military schools include the Aviation Life Support Equipment Officer Course, Instructor Pilot Course, Instrument Flight Examiner’s Course, Aviation High Altitude Mountain Qualification Course, Anti-Terrorism Level II Course, and the Readiness Officers Course. He has completed all levels of Warrant Officer Professional Military Education including the Warrant Officer Senior Service Education Course. He is qualified in the UH-1 H/V Huey and the UH-60 A/A+/L/M Blackhawk Helicopters.


CW5 Stumbo’s military decorations include The Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (3), Army Commendation Medal (6), Army Achievement Medal (5), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (10), National Defense Service Medal (2), Humanitarian Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with 2 stars, Operation Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal, Arm Forces Reserve Medal (3) with M device, NATO Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3), Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Combat Action Badge, Master Army Aviator Badge, Iowa Meritorious Service Medal (2), Iowa Humanitarian Service Ribbon (2), Iowa Leadership Ribbon with Torch, Iowa State Service Ribbon (6), and the Iowa Eisenhower Ribbon. CW5 Stumbo’s deployments include 2005 Operation Bright Star Egypt, 2006-2007 Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2010-2011 Operation Noble Eagle-Kosovo KFOR-13, 2014-2015 Operation Spartan Shield-Kuwait & Operation Inherent Resolve-Iraq.


CW5 Stumbo and his wife Colette live in Boone, Iowa and have 3 grown children and three grandchildren. His daughter Madison Diemer lives in Grimes, IA with her husband Edward and their two children Eliza and Estelle. His son Nicolas Stumbo and his wife Mary live in Waukee, IA with their son James. His son Mitchell lives in Kansas City, MO.
